Couples & Marriage Counselling

We start from a position of "OKness" - that both of you are OK people trying your best. Obviously this may be very unsuccessful, but that shouldn't hide the good intent of both of you.

Of course, if your relationship is in difficulty, you may not be feeling great about your partner. But if you want to come back together, blame, fault and finger-pointing are unhelpful.

What is helpful is that:

  • You are both heard in the session and that no one's needs are ignored. This certainly includes telling your partner about how hurt you feel about what's happened.
  • We would work to improve your communication with each other, so that you can find a way to speak in a way that will be heard, and listen in a way that hears the other.
  • We would look to stop self defeating behaviours and unhelpful repeated patterns. That sense of "here we go again" and "going round in circles" that blights so many couples attempts to solve their problems.
  • We would work to repair the emotional connection and reconnect you to the things that drew you together as a couple.

Our expectation is that you will come to understand some of the good intent of your partner, develop new skills that sidestep the stuck place you can get into, and see the relationship in a new light.

Your Investment

Relationship counselling takes some effort on your part. You will need to invest time - typically a session week to being with, money - £60 a session, and most of all, emotional effort.

Our Special Interests

Sheila has a particular interest in encouraging men to play an active part in a relationship. She is also interested in the impact of family issues: conception, pregnancy, birth and miscarriage, parenthood, the loss of identity as a new parent, the stresses of bringing up a family, and the problems of creating a step-family.

Rob has a particular interest in couples work, and in helping men have a fuller emotional life. He has worked with both male domestic violence perpetrators and male domestic violence victims, and is interested in the wider issues around anger and abusive behaviour.
